EMMY AWARDS 2011 – Preview – Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Nominees:

  • Jan Lynch, Glee
  • Julie Bowen, Modern Family
  • Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
  • Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Life
  • Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
  • Betty White, Hot in Cleveland

Compare to last year nominees, this category only brings comedy legend Betty White as the new nominee. Her name alone just is a potential threat to take the trophy home in this category, plus in her submitted episode “Free Elka” for Hot in Cleveland, she shares her first scene with Mary Tyler Moore in a jail cell, which for nostalgic reasons could make voters choose her.

However, last year’s winner and Emmy host Jane Lynch (Glee) has sent a dramatic tape “Funeral” where her character Sue Sylvester’s sister dies, which standouts from the other funny tapes. In her advantage, Saturday Night Live Kristen Wiig chose the episode, which is hosted by Jane Lynch, so in two tapes we get to see two different performances from Lynch, in a dramatic and comedic way.

The Modern Family ladies could potentially help each other with each other tapes. Julie Bowen submitted “Strangers on a Treadmill” in which Claire is worried that her husband is going to embarrass himself as he thinks he is funny. It features a hilarious opening scene where her characters shows that she only laughs at her husband’s jokes with her mouth, but not with her eyes, plus she has a sweet vulnerable moment with Phil and her daughter. Sofia Vergara submitted “Slow Down You Neighbors” where her character tries to learn how to ride a bike. It shows Gloria in a cute storyline, but her screen time is too short compare to Bowen, whose storyline in this episode is referenced in the title of the tape.

Jane Krakowski unfortunately does not have enough screen time in her episode, but it is really a hilarious performance.

Prediction: Not unanimous – Jane Lynch, Glee or Julie Bowen, Modern Family

Spoiler: Betty White, Hot in Cleveland

Wish Winner: Julie Bowen, Modern Family
